World's cheapest countries: which is the cheapest?

Readers are divided on whether it is right to build on council land for a condo development. But are most smart homeowners doing the right thing?

Some argue that the council shouldn’t have given so much land to the developers and should be more careful with its decisions. One reader points out: “People have to pay rates on it but not on the debt itself, and we all have to pay taxes but not on debt in perpetuity.”

Others feel that the council has taken a view, and that they should take some responsibility. The reader said: “The council made their decision and I don’t feel responsible for what their right action has been.

“There are things you are responsible for, like buying a house. They did not play by the same rules as the market forces did, and I was duped.”

Meanwhile, there are others who point out that consumers have the biggest responsibility. One reader said: “Buyers need to learn how to read the property market and stay on top of their property deeds.

“Too many people let the opportunity slip through their fingers because they believe they will get another chance, but they might not.

“If they lose the house they buy they can stay in a family home, or be happy in their small flat but not in a three-bed where you are forced to live with two other adults and pay over the odds for your shared flatshare or take on the public sector debt.”
