The death of a 60-year-old woman in an East New York house Sunday night has been declared a homicide, police said.
A former Mount Vernon resident, Gladys Alcantara, was discovered in the garage by police, who were called around 9:17 p.m. because of a “woman who appeared to be injured,” police said.
The cause of death has not been released. Police said that a female relative discovered Alcantara’s body and brought her to police.
Police have said that there was no physical altercation reported at the residence.
“We’re trying to determine exactly what happened,” said Terence Monahan, a spokesman for the chief medical examiner’s office.
Police are still looking for Ms. Alcantara’s husband, Fidel M. Carbajal, 55, who they say fled the scene after Ms. Alcantara’s body was discovered.
Police say Mr. Carbajal may have been driving Ms. Alcantara’s 2008 Nissan Altima. Anyone with information about his whereabouts is urged to call police or Crime Stoppers.
