We picked out the five best and worst moments from the US music awards show on NBC.
1. A new generation
Taylor Swift was forced to walk out in public in Los Angeles in a park, so that a ‘spy cam’ could capture “someone wearing her t-shirt”. Oh the glory of a social media age!

2. Sting and Mavis Staples
Former Rolling Stones frontman turned solo artist Sting walked on stage with civil rights activist Mavis Staples. After the trio played together, she said “old hat, I can’t even understand you”. He responded: “People keep saying to me I look old, I’m just happy I look young.”

3. Kelly Clarkson
The pop superstar singer-songwriter joined the Voice UK judge to sing as part of the Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles. The audience seemed delighted to see the US Idol finalist make an appearance.

4. Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong surprised the audience by hitting the stage. His appearance was a surprise because he had dropped out of a scheduled performance on stage. Even so, he missed out on the chance to end his performance with “Oh! The irony” speech that made him famous at the Super Bowl in 2010.
5. Acting up
Joey + Rory have gone for gold with their 100th song. They offered the crowd “one last chance” to sing along, by rocking the Honda Civic Theatre in Los Angeles. Despite the amateurish quality of their performance – with huge gaps between each song – the crowd sang along.
