Vices wiped out at El Arenal dunes in Navarra after beaches were cleared for visitors to enjoy the Spanish sun

Tourists have been warned against having sex in the dunes on a Spanish beach because it is ruining the place for everybody else.

Mallorca’s tourism minister, Fatima Sambala, said Thursday that having sex on a beach was not considered “an enjoyable activity” but said beaches must be kept open to all.

Sambala, who was on a visit to El Arenal dunes in Andalucia, near the Spanish border with Morocco, said it was a shame that tourists wanted to have sex there and to put more “pressure on the municipality and the AVA [Australian national park authority] to close the dunes”.

The AVA said it was aware of the issue and was considering ways to deal with it.

It said the dunes were alive with birds and insects and with bats and that having sex had to be put into perspective.

“If we assume that every visitor who feels like it wants to have sex on a public beach is doing it without seeing the consequences of their actions on the environment, their degradation and neglect towards public sanitation and the birds that visit this beautiful beach in El Arenal, we would be violating nature,” it said.

El Arenal beach is one of the country’s most popular and a top spot for groups taking selfies. It is several miles away from Cabo de Gata, where famous photographs of David Beckham kissing his wife, Victoria, were taken.

Police in Cabo de Gata have reportedly warned tourists off having sex there. It is said to have been a scene of public sex and canals of human excrement since last year.
