A doctor who appears on Grey’s Anatomy was arrested in a Washington, D.C., sex assault investigation Friday.
The attorney for Dr. Steven Gerard Pierson Jr., who has appeared in numerous shows and films, including Criminal Minds and Fox’s 24, says his client is innocent.
“It’s possible that a bad referral may have caused the child to be placed in the care of the wrong doctor,” said Robert Anello, referring to the disorder identified in the case. “It’s also possible he’s the victim of a set-up operation.”
The charge against Pierson, 39, involves a child aged 12 or younger. He was charged with sexual abuse of a minor, sexual abuse of a minor by a custodian and sexual abuse of a minor while in a custodial relationship.
Pierson was arrested Friday afternoon at the Fairview Heights, Ill., office where he has his own practice.
Another man, whose criminal record includes a felony conviction for possession of child pornography, was also arrested Friday as a witness. He was identified as Michael Samuel Brock, 27, of Iola, Wis.
Both Pierson and Brock are scheduled to appear in federal court in Chicago later Friday to face charges. Court records don’t list attorneys for the men.
Pierson was active in the entertainment industry as a young actor. The London Evening Standard reported in 2005 that he had played the lead in the hit West End musical The Band’s Visit.
He has also been listed in many news accounts as a doctor. On Thursday, the Morning News in Decatur, Ill., reported that he served as a doctor at a local hospital. It didn’t say whether he still practiced or who was still treating patients.
A spokeswoman for the local hospital confirmed that Pierson was a doctor there from 2004 until 2010.
She said the hospital would continue to treat patients, even though Pierson was no longer employed by the hospital.
The TV show Grey’s Anatomy credits Pierson as Dr. Steven Carl Carter. He has not been seen in an episode since season eight. His last credits include a voice-over on Family Guy and an episode of Fox’s animated comedy Bob’s Burgers.
His background also includes his college days at Hope College in Holland, Mich., where he played basketball for the basketball team.
Pierson graduated from college in 1997.
The story that led to the arrest of Pierson is intertwined with Fox’s animated hit Family Guy, which also features guest appearances by Pierson.
In 2012, Fox aired a Family Guy episode in which a mother (played by Katey Sagal) accused her husband (Steve Odom) of molesting her daughter. The woman was sent to a therapist, who on the way told her she should see the actor playing the father, Pierson. The therapist also suggested the mother shouldn’t ignore the girl’s sexual behaviors.
Odom is expected to reprise his role in an upcoming episode.
